Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories, or VDLs, have evolved toward a more human-centered design, focusing on the greater purpose and providing for the scientists and technicians of each space. Just as the needs of science evolve over time, so must the needs and architectural considerations for these spaces.

It is becoming increasingly important to marry biosafety, biosecurity, and operational needs into a streamlined design that operates safely and efficiently, while implementing modern design principles.

Office and public traffic circulate safely around the central lab block. Staff enjoy close proximity to the labs, but outside the lab zone.

An open, flexible lab design is complemented by views directly to the exterior, providing enhanced daylighting, energy savings, and occupant comfort.

Large animal necropsy spaces with crane rails, coolers, and various surgical instruments are a pathology lab crossed with an industrial operation. As an inherently difficult workspace with a high safety risk for employees, amenities such as clerestory windows provide daylight and a view outside have a significant impact on employee wellness.
